"Cotties Run"
Established as a Southdown stud in 2004 with the purchase of a remnant 6 ewes and 1 ram from the Jadon stud - discovered by accident in the hills behind Orange, NSW.
In early 2005 a ram and 2 ewes were added from Graeme Hooper's Clear Hills stud along with two TARA texels (to breed Aussiedowns).
The original interest was to preserve and, if possible; expand one of the Heritage breeds and interest has been high at local shows when exhibited with our usual Suffolk stock.
The stud specialises in "starter packs" for small farm owners as well as boutique sheep meat production for local and Sydney butchers. We look to expand our Southdown numbers producing yet another "traditional meat" wether and highly fertile, feminine ewe stock.
Our daily employment, Ross as a local GP/Anaesthetist/Obstetrician and Jeannette, a Community Midwife/Child Health Nurse, allows us a chance to use our medical knowledge in pursuit of both genetic and phenotypic improvement. With pressure on to improve Australian prime lamb to meet both domestic and export demand we believe the British Downs breeds are the future for both growth and taste - the criteria the market now demands.
