"Clear Hills" Flock Rams November 2004
The Hooper family have been on property at "Clear
Hills", Goorambat East, Victoria for five generations.
The Southdown Stud was founded by Les Hooper at age 15 in 1928.
The next year Les won his first Champion Ram at the Benalla Agricultural
Show. The first of many Supreme Champion, Champion, Reserve Champion
and Most Sucessful Exibitor titles, both at major shows in Victoria
and interstate as well as local country show's. Our old ram 76/03 (see
photo below as a young ram) just won Champion Southdown Ram at the
2006 Australian Sheep and Wool Show.
From a meagre beginning of about five ewes the stud expanded to
750-800 breeding ewes in the 1970's and 80's and was the largest
Southdown Stud in the Southern Hemisphere if not the world. Currently
"Clear Hills" runs about 230 breeding ewe's.
The type of Southdowns "Clear Hills" now produces was Les' life long project. He took the dark, dumpy, woolly headed Southdown and made it the muscly, tall, long animal, so needed in the prime lamb industry today.
"Clear Hills" Annual sale is the first Wednesday in November.
