"Chandpara Southdown Stud"

Chandpara Ram

The Chandpara Southdown Stud was officially founded in 1988, but its founder, Andrew Sellars-Jones, began breeding Southdowns way in 1974.

Over the years the ewe flock has been kept small, with culling being heavy so as to concentrate on quality. This, in combination with sourcing the best genetics available in Australia and New Zealand via artificial insemination and embryo transfer programs, has resulted in long, lean sheep with excellent growth rates and muscling. Every year since 1992 all yearling rams have been weighed and scanned for fat depth and eye muscle area. While not replacing the studmaster's keen eye, these objective measurements have certainly aided in the selection of the type of sheep that today's lamb producer expects.

The Stud regularly shows at The Australian Sheep and Wool Show and The Royal Melbourne Show where many first places and championships have been achieved, plus Regional Shows where the title of Interbreed Champion was usually awarded. At the Royal Melbourne Show 2000 the Stud received a blue ribbon in all 4 ewe classes entered, and took out both the Champion and Reserve Champion Ewe awards amongst strong competition. In addition, the Champion Ram was sired by a Chandpara ram. In 2001 we were awarded first prize for the two year old ram and two year old ewe as well as taking out the Best Group title. At the Whittlesea Show in November 2001 the stud was awarded Supreme Interbreed Shortwool Exhibit in both the ram and ewe sections - for the third year in a row!

At the Australian Sheep and Wool Show in Bendigo 2005 the major prizes awarded to Chandpara were:
- Champion Ram
- Reserve Champion Ram
- Reserve Champion Ewe
- Best Group of 1 ram & 2 ewes - went on to be placed 2nd in the interbreed competition
- Best Yearling Ram
At the same show in 2004, we took out the coveted Champion Southdown Ram ribbon.

The stud is Brucellosis Accredited (Acc. No. 2286) and has achieved Flock Status of Monitored Negative 3 (MN3) as part of the Australian Sheep Johne's Disease market Assurance Program (Cert. No. VS1247)
